Born in Nevers, Pierre-Gaspard Chaumette, during the revolution of 1789, became a member of the cordelier's club and legal adviser for the insurrectionist Commune of Paris (1792). He took part in the September massacres (1792) and the movement for de-Christianization and the installation of the cult and the Festival of Reason (late 1793). He proposed democratic policies for the nation and the teaching of public health. Chaumette was arrested and guillotined with the Hébertist extremists. See also hébert, jacques-rené.
